Hahahaha! Yeah that bridge is pretty well known. And if you ever see the direct approach, there are huge signs warning of the low clearance and people but it all the time anyways! It’s in Charlotte NC.

I pay for an expensive GPS unit, geared for trucking. Had an older one that ran me to a low clearance bridge one night in Philadelphia. I had to back up over a mile to find a place to turn around. Fortunately a policeman came up and ran interference for me. I’m a standard size truck and trailer and I need 13’ 6” to clear.

True story:
Many years ago a truck with an oversize load got stuck under a bridge in Fayetteville, AR. Apparently the driver was cautious but went under it anyway but slowly. He got stuck without much damage. This was on a main thorofare so traffic was tied up for hours. They couldn't figure a way to get the load free....till some 12 year old kid came along as said, "just let some air out of the tires."

You could do it for a bridge but also digging land off the bottom too.

The reason given for that bridge not being rebuilt is, that it’s a rail road bridge and they would have to change the grade of the rail road for miles in either direction to raise the bridge. It would be cheaper to dig the road deeper underneath.

Vehicles hitting bridges happens a lot, all over the place. It’s a hazard of driving bigger vehicles. It’s one reason our routes are limited. There are other reasons like a road having curves so tight that the truck and trailer can’t make the curves or having bridges that are not built well enough to hold the weight of the truck.

Yeah, on Saturday. Had to wait 3 hours for a tow truck to show up while blocking the entrance to the place I was delivering too. There was another entrance but had a small gate that I could not make the turn into with my trailer. No harm done really just a 500 dollar towing fee. They won’t hit me for that because I was where I was supposed to be. If I had been trying to shortcut something or pulled in where I was not supposed too, I’d have to pay that.

I know a few roads like that. There is one called "The Pig Trail" in Arkansas. Arkansas Highway 23 between Ozark and Arkansas Highway 16. The back road on the east side of the Mono Craters in California. The road from Duck Creek to I-35 north of Las Vegas.

I follow that bridge on youtube, if that makes sense. Hilarious how they managed to get an extra 8" clearance than it used to have, and people still hit it all the time.

Yep, that's part of the problem. Same with people with motor homes.
