As Reason is claimed to have no soundengine, my suggestion would be, that THEN MAKE AN ONE!
I.E. Industry Standard Sounding One!!
Happy belated April 1!

I think would should be done along that line is swappable modules in the mixer. Preamp's, eq's, compressors, summing.

Might be so. I don't like to do MY stuff in the mixer, I'm allabout an rack-level tweaker tho. So right now I usually create a rack version of the SSL-stuff and tweak em there.

But in musicwise, it's all about the 'sound' more than anything. If Reason sounds however you want, then does it also keep it's promises then? My experience is that RRP sounds better as example. Why don't I use it? Because of the RRP limitations and certain tasks that are shitte in the other DAWs. Otherwise, the point taken from both of the setups and your freedom to sound something else too than only Reason.

It depends on what is being done at the time. If I'm focusing on music-making, I'm going to be adding plugins to a track as I add new instruments, i.e, in Reason adding new devices to the rack. If I'm mixing a song, I want more convenient access to each channel's eq and compression at the mixer. Reason eventually got both ways of adding SSL eq and compression, using what is available in the mixer or adding it in the rack. And that makes good sense for whichever workflow you might be using at the time.

Back to the specific point of a sound engine color switch, I don't know that a single switch would make sense. If you only want a global preset color option with no parameters, it could be ok. But users are going to want options and parameters. Color in the analog world is typically the sum of specific preamps, eq, compression, and buss summing with specific settings. And non-emulations are going to behave a lot differently at similar settings than emulations, so a simple switch won't make sense in the case of having options and parameters available.
